Sussex Bird Club | From the Cloud Forest to the Pacific Coast: Birding in Oaxaca, Mexico

Online & In-Person

Join the Sussex Bird Club for an armchair view of a birding trip to Oaxaca, Mexico in early 2022. Sussex Bird Club members spent two exciting weeks birding the mountain ranges of the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Sierra Madre Occidental, including experiencing two earthquakes! In between these mountain ranges lies the valley of Oaxaca, where the city of the same name is located at an elevation of 5000 feet. Within the political boundaries of this state, you can experience rugged Pacific beaches, humid pine and oak forests, Mexico’s largest cloud forest, arid valleys, and the tropical lowlands of the Gulf of Mexico.

More than 700 species of birds have been recorded within Oaxaca’s borders, including 40 Mexican endemics. You will see highlights of some of the 328 bird species they recorded. This was all made possible by their guide, David Mackay of Solipaso Tours. In addition to the birds that were photographed, the Sussex Bird Club members will share their views of abundant rich history, culture and the gourmet food that makes Oaxaca a vacation destination.

The Sussex Bird Club's primary objective is to promote the knowledge and enjoyment of wild birds through guided field trips and monthly meetings about various aspects of birding. Meetings are open to all and beginning birders are always welcome.
