Sussex Bird Club | The Spectacle of Fall Songbird Migration
Online
Join this monthly meeting of The Sussex Bird Club for a presentation by Derek Stoner on fall songbird migration. From waves of warblers to swarms of sparrows, fall migration of songbirds encompasses literally millions of feathered travelers moving through our region from August to November on their way to Wintering grounds. Follow along on a photo journey highlighting the excitement, challenge, and reward of identifying migrant songbirds and understanding their motivations for their massive migrational movements. Learn how to make the most of your days afield through a better understanding of the habitat and food needs of these tiny travelers.
Derek Stoner is a lifelong outdoorsman with a passion for connecting people to nature. During a fifteen-year career with the Delaware Nature Society, he led programs ranging from summer camps to major international ecotours, managed the biodiversity enhancement of the 860-acre Middle Run Natural Area, and coordinated the planting of 25,000 trees and shrubs for habitat improvement. The award-winning Middle Run Birding Trail is his creation and is regarded as a premier location for experiencing the spectacle of songbird migration. Derek also is the past president of the Delaware Ornithological Society, and the founder of the Delaware Youth Birders Club. His writing and photography appear in Outdoor Delaware, Wild Delaware, and Wild Delmarva books, Pennsylvania Game News, and the News Journal. His new venture will be a book and website called Wildlife Gardenscaping, focusing on the power of creating high-value wildlife habitat through a thoughtful approach to gardening and landscaping. A resident of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he lives with his wife Hilary and their two young children on a property full of plants, animals and biodiversity.
