2sdays: "They Shall Not Grow Old"

The director of The Lord of the Rings trilogy has made a fine, must-see WWI documentary as an homage to the British troops. “An impressive technical achievement with a walloping emotional impact,” says Rotten Tomatoes of the film. “They Shall Not Grow Old pays brilliant cinematic tribute to the sacrifice of a generation.”The technical aspects of the film are truly amazing. It features previously unseen footage of soldiers as they faced the fear and uncertainty of frontline battle in Belgium. What makes this so powerful is not only digital remastering and colorizing, but recreated audio through the help of lipreading experts. This is accompanied by additional comments from interviews of former soldiers made in the sixties and seventies. “Peter Jackson has taken a mass of World War I archival clips from Britain's Imperial War Museum and fashioned it into a brisk, absorbing and moving experience,” says Ben Kenigsberg of The New York Times. “For the first time, those jittery, frenetic figures in ancient newsreels look and move like people you know,” explains Newsday’s Rafer Guzman. Mike La Salle of The San Francisco Chronicle calls the film “moving and profound” because “actually seeing something is different from knowing it intellectually, or even from imagining it.” Come to Dover Public Library to see this remarkable achievement and learn more about the soldiers of World War I. 1:39. Rated R for war violence.
