2sdays: "Just Charlie"

2sdays: "Just Charlie"

Charlie is a young soccer star who seems to have a secure and brilliant future ahead, but sees her life as a nightmare because she is trapped in a boy’s body. Her next move could tear her family apart and threaten everything they hold dear. “These stories need to be told,” says Spencer Coile of Film Inquiry…“And perhaps it is our job to listen.” One strength of the film is that it examines the emotions of not just Charlie, but her entire family. Another is the lead performance by Harry Gilby, who also played a young J.R.R. Tolkien in the recent bio-pic. Gilby’s “beautifully understated performance…never plays to stereotypes,” says Rich Cline of Shadows on the Wall. David Ehrenstein of the Los Angeles Blade says Just Charlie is both “moving and insightful.” Norm Gidney of Film Threat praises director Rebekah Fortune for her “refreshing, original approach to material that could easily devolve into preachy, after-school special territory,” and describes Just Charlie as “a charming character piece that empathetically grapples with internal and external struggles we all have.” You may come away from the film with a better knowledge of not just Charlie and her family, but yourself as well. 1:35. Not rated. The British Board of Film Classification mentions strong language and discriminatory attitudes, so that sounds like PG or PG-13.
