2sdays: "Gloria Bell"

2sdays: "Gloria Bell"

Gloria Bell is a bittersweet coming-of-middle-age story set to a disco beat. Julianne Moore is terrific as a free-spirited divorcée who spends her days at a straight-laced office job and her nights on the dance floor, joyfully letting loose at clubs around Los Angeles. After meeting Arnold (John Turturro) on a night out, she finds herself thrust into an unexpected new romance, filled with both the joys of budding love and the complications of dating, identity and family. Their relationship is definitely off by more than a few beats, but with many joyful experiences along the way. The film’s outstanding supporting cast includes Michael Cera, Rita Wilson, Sean Astin, Holland Taylor and Jeanne Tripplehorn.  Critics love Moore and Gloria: “Whether she's dealing with conflicts at work, doing laugh therapy sessions, or smoking weed on the floor of her apartment while the Californian sunlight slants through the window, this is a Bell that chimes,” says Ed Potton of The Times (UK). And Adam Graham of The Detroit News explains the actress’s and heroine’s appeal this way: “Moore digs in and finds the intricacies in her character. She’s not showy, but she turns in an honest, understated performance that all comes together in a joyous, melancholy, liberating dance set to Laura Branigan’s ‘Gloria.’” Interestingly, the film is a remake of a recent film by the same director, with the setting moved from Santiago, Chile. “Well worth the translation,” proclaims Sandra Hall of The Sydney Morning Herald. 1:42. Rated R for sexuality, nudity, language and some drug use.
