The Legacy and the Legends of Howard High School, Presented by Syl Woolford - In-Person or Virtual

Online

Howard High School was created after the Civil War with the assistance of General Otis Oliver Howard the head of the Freedman’s Bureau.

From 1868 to 1922, it was the only high school for colored students in the State of Delaware. In 1922, Delaware State University opened up a high school, but this high school was a boarding school which required students to pay room and board.

Functioning in a Jim Crow society, Howard High School still found a way to thrive and produce well qualified students. In addition to Howard’s history, this lecture will talk about some graduates of Howard High School who made significant contributions to Delaware and to the country.
