In celebration of Transgender Awareness Month, join the ACLU of Delaware, the Lewes Public Library, and other organizations from 5:00 - 8:30 PM for a public discussion of a landmark LGBTQ+ case, the current state of LGBTQ+ rights, and the launch of a new Know Your Rights resource. The evening's schedule is:

  • 5:00 - 5:30 PM Opening reception with refreshment (in-person only)
  • 5:30 - 7:00 PM: ACLU, CAMP Rehoboth, and PFLAG panel discussion (in-person and online)
  • 7:00 - 8:30 PM: Lives in the Law with Margaret A. Nash and Karen L. Graves (in-person and online)

The panel discussion will focus on the new Know Your Rights publication and how it will be used to support students, parents, and teachers in Delaware. The Lives in the Law portion features Margaret A. Nash and Karen L. Graves, authors of Mad River, Marjorie Rowland, and the Quest for LGBTQ Teachers’ Rights. This book examines the important case of Rowland v. Mad River School District in which the U.S. Supreme Court dissent laid out the First and Fourteenth Amendment rights entitled to LGBTQ+ people. The case is frequently cited in support of LGBTQ+ rights. Copies of the book will be available for sale and for signing at the event, with proceeds going to the ACLU-DE.

You will walk away with an increased knowledge of past LGBTQ+ legal battles, an understanding of how far LGBTQ+ rights have come, and a sneak peak of the new Know Your Rights guide created by the ACLU of Delaware for students, parents, and educators on LGBTQ+ expression in schools.

Participating in this program will prepare you to assist the ongoing efforts across the state to advocate for LGBTQ rights in schools. You will learn about when and how legal intervention is used to defend our LGBTQ rights, as well as how to use this guide as an educator, parent, administration staff (including counselors), or student.

This event is in-person at the Lewes Public Library, with a virtual attendance option via Zoom. Admission is free for all. Online attendees may join the event anytime from 5:30 - 8:30 PM.
