Join us for a conversation with Miriam Scharfman Zadek, author of Miriam Hearing Sister: A Memoir, which documents her experiences growing up in a family with both deaf and hearing members from the 1930s through World War II and beyond. Through brief and evocative vignettes, Zadek relates her memories of family life, capturing the innocence of childhood, the confusion of adolescence, and the progression through adulthood. Throughout this journey, she presents a narrative of historical and cultural importance centered on the lives of deaf and hearing Jewish people in the mid-twentieth century. Joining Zadek in conversation is Sara Rosen, At Large Member of from the Seaside Jewish Community Board of Directors.

A graduate of Barnard College and the Columbia University School of Social Work, Zadek worked at the Hearing and Speech Agency (HASA) of Metropolitan Baltimore, to develop a model of social work counseling for parents and families confronted with speech, language, and hearing problems. She is the founder of the Baltimore region’s only nonprofit American Sign Language interpreting referral agency. Zadek is a recipient of the Maryland Governor’s Service Lifetime Achievement Award, given in recognition of her 40-plus years of service to individuals and families facing communication challenges. Zadek is a part-time resident of Rehoboth for almost 50 years. She has been married to Dr. Robert Zadek, her high school senior prom date, for 70 years. They have four daughters, eleven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, all of whom consider Rehoboth their home-away-from-home.

This program is co-sponsored by Seaside Jewish Community. American Sign Language interpretation and closed captioning will be available during this event.
