Sussex Bird Club | Impressions of the Galapagos

Join the Sussex Bird Club online for a presentation by retired wildlife biologist Jack Barclay.

Barclay, who spoke about Burrowing Owls two years ago, is back to discuss about the Galapagos Islands. His presentation is based on his visit to the islands in 2009. He takes us there with lots of photographs and explains what it is like to visit the Galapagos; how you get there, where you stay (on a boat), your daily routine, what you see, and how inspiring it is to visit these islands that inspired Darwin’s theories of evolution and natural selection. While showing photos of many of the endemic species Barclay will discuss the overwhelming impressions one gets when visiting the islands: the extraordinary tameness of the wildlife and the less conspicuous but prevalent effects of how competition for resources has led to specialization and speciation.

Jack spent eleven years working at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology on the Eastern Peregrine Reintroduction Program for the Peregrine Fund. He was an important contributor to the reintroduction program for the eastern United States. He is partially responsible for all the peregrines in the East that we now see. Jack graduated from Cornell University in 1972 where he shared an apartment and spent many hours birding with Rob Blye, SBC Field Trip VP. He earned a MS in wildlife biology at Michigan Technological University in the UP. He now lives on a spectacular wooded property in Port Angeles WA. He landscaped the property with over 400 (not kidding) dwarf conifers and installed over 50 nest boxes.

Join us for this monthly meeting of The Sussex Bird Club. The Sussex Bird Club's primary objective is to promote the knowledge and enjoyment of wild birds through guided field trips and monthly meetings about various aspects of birding. Meetings are open to all and beginning birders are always welcome.
