Conversation with Anne Boylan | Votes for Delaware Women

Conversation with Anne Boylan | Votes for Delaware Women

Online
Online & In-Person

The library, the League of Women Voters of Delaware, League of Women Voters of Sussex County, Delaware, and Delaware Humanities are co-sponsoring a conversation with author Anne Boylan on her book Votes for Delaware Women, the first book-length study of the woman suffrage struggle in Delaware, placing it within the rich historical scholarship on the national story. Joining her in conversation will be Dr. Marlene A. Saunders.

A riveting storyteller, Dr. Boylan introduces us to the courageous Delawareans working at the state and national level to win the franchise. Starting in the 1890’s, white and African-American women organized and advocated for “votes for women” at the state and national levels, culminating in a dramatic struggle in Dover in the spring of 1920 over the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Dr. Anne Boylan is Professor Emerita of History and Women and Gender Studies at the University of Delaware. A social historian of the United States, her research and writing encompass women’s history, social and cultural history, voluntary associations, religion, and historical memory. She has been the recipient of fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Radcliffe Institute, the American Historical Association, the Hagley Museum and Library, and the University of Delaware. She has been inducted into the Society of American Historians and recently served as a Consulting Historian for the Congressional Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission.
