The Underground Railroad is one of the most mystical stories in American history. It tells the story of an enslaved people who took their destiny into their own hands and sought their freedom.

The most frequently told stories are those of the legendary Harriet Tubman who with station master Thomas Garrett orchestrated the escape of hundreds of freedom seeks. These stories are just a few of tens of thousands of escapes.

The lecture “Heroes of the Underground Railroad” tells the story two of the most legendary stories. The first is of the largest slave escape ever attempted in the history of the United States on a ship called the “Pearl”. The second is the capture of Edmund Chaplin, one of the leaders of the Albany, New York branch of the Underground Railroad, and the “King’s Ransom” that had to be paid to keep him from going to jail.

Lecturer and Historian, Syl Woolford, is a native Delawarean. His interest in history began with the researching of his own family history in 2008. He traced his mother’s family back 210 years in the city of Newark, Delaware. 

This program will be conducted via Zoom.  Registration is required with an email address.  Participants will receive instructions for joining the meeting with registration and also via email ONE HOUR before the lecture.
