In 1917 Horace Liveright (1883-1933) with Albert Boni (1892-1981) co-founded the Modern Library and Liveright publishers. In time, the Liveright imprint became both famous and infamous as it published works such as T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, Ernest Hemingway’s In Our Time, Theodore Dreiser’s An American Tragedy, William Faulkner’s A Soldier’s Play, Hart Crane’s The Bridge, and  the English translation of Petronius’ first-century work titled Satyricon, which caught the censorial attention of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice but to no avail as a court dismissed the complaint. Horace Liveright was the driving force behind the renowned Liveright imprint. He was also instrumental in the emergence of the Harlem Renaissance in the late 1920s and 1930s in that he published many of the great Black writers of that period. When Liveright ceased publishing, W.W. Norton and Co. bought the backlist and name in 1973. In 2011, Norton relaunched the Liveright imprint – thus, this year marks the 10th anniversary of that relaunch.

Join us online as Ronald Collins, Lewes Public Library’s Distinguished Lecturer and author of numerous books, interviews Robert Weil, Editor-in-Chief and Publishing Director of the Liveright imprint. Weil has published two National Book Award winners and seven nominees along with three Pulitzer Prize winners, one of which was this year: Les and Tamara Payne’s The Dead are Arising: The Life of Malcolm X.

Here is a list of the 20 representative books Weil has done at Liveright. We invite you to support Liveright by purchasing any of the books from local independent bookstore, Browseabout Books. Call-in orders are accepted at (302) 226-2665 or you can stop by the store to purchase a copy. For store hours, please visit their website.
