In collaboration with the History Book Festival, join us for a talk with Dean Jobb, author of The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream: The Hunt for a Victorian Era Serial Killer, an offering of the 2021 virtual History Book Festival. Joining Dean in conversation is author Art Taylor.

In the late 1800s, one of the first international serial killers murdered as many as ten people in the United States, Britain, and Canada. Over the span of 15 years, Dr. Thomas Neill Cream targeted vulnerable and desperate women who came to him for medical advice, using his knowledge of poisons to conceal his crimes. This definitive account of his life exposes the flawed detection methods, bungled investigations, corrupt officials, and stifling morality of Victorian era society that allowed Dr. Cream to prey on victims undetected, time after time.

Dean Jobb is a three-time winner of Atlantic Canada’s top journalism award. His 2015 book, Empire of Deception: The Incredible Story of a Master Swindler Who Seduced a City and Captivated the Nation, was named Nonfiction Book of the Year by the Chicago Writers Association. He is a professor at the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Art Taylor has won several awards for his short fiction, and his novel in stories, On the Road with Del & Louise, won the Agatha Award for Best First Novel. His work has also appeared in The Best American Mystery Stories yearly anthology. He is an associate professor of English at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
