Join us for a conversation with Carl Zimmer, as part of the library's Science and Society lecture series.

Is a virus alive? A fire? What sets the living world apart from the non-living? Carl Zimmer explores how scientists have struggled with the mystery of life itself for centuries, and how a consensus on how to define it eludes them today. As we learn more about the astonishing marvels of life at the molecular level, the struggle to understand what it means to be alive endures.

Carl Zimmer is the science columnist at the New York Times and the author of fourteen books, including She Has Her Mother's Laugh and A Planet of Viruses. His latest book is Life's Edge: The Search For What It Means To Be Alive. He is professor adjunct at Yale, where he teaches writing. Zimmer's work has earned awards from the National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society for the Study of Evolution.

The conversation will be moderated by Colin Norman, the former News Editor at Science, and Fred Dylla, Executive Director Emeritus of the American Institute of Physics and author of Scientific Journeys. This event is part of the series Science and Society - Making Sense of the World Around Us, launched by the Lewes Public Library last year and co-organized by Fred Dylla and Linda Dylla.
