Science and Society | The Lost and Found Genius of Gregor Mendel, the Father of Genetics

Online

Join us for a conversation with Robin Marantz Henig, author of The Monk in the Garden: The Lost and Found Genius of Gregor Mendel, the Father of Genetics.

You might have heard of Gregor Mendel, the Moravian monk who patiently grew peas in a monastery garden and revolutionized our understanding of inheritance. But you might not have heard his discovery went unnoticed and unappreciated for 35 years. It was rescued from obscurity in a single season, the spring of 1900, when three scientists from three different countries simultaneously dusted off Mendel's groundbreaking paper and finally recognized its significance. In this talk, Robin Marantz Henig will discuss her book, The Monk in the Garden, and talk about this little-known chapter in the birth of genetics, a field that continues to challenge the way we think about life itself.

Robin Marantz Henig is a long-time journalist and the author of nine books, including Pandora's Baby, about the early days of IVF research, and A Dancing Matrix, about how new pandemic viruses emerge. She lives most of the year in New York City, where she teaches at the Science, Health, and Environmental Reporting Program (SHERP) at New York University, and part of the year in Lewes, where she and her husband Jeff have a house just down the street from the library.

The conversation will be moderated by Colin Norman, the former News Editor at Science, and Fred Dylla, Executive Director Emeritus of the American Institute of Physics and author of Scientific Journeys. This event is part of the series Science and Society - Making Sense of the World Around Us, launched by the Lewes Public Library last year and co-organized by Fred Dylla and Linda Dylla.
