Sussex Bird Club | Burrowing Owls in California: An Abundant Endangered Species?
OnlineJoin us for a live, interactive monthly meeting of The Sussex Bird Club, featuring Jack Barclay who will present "Burrowing Owls in California: An Abundant Endangered Species?"
For over 20 years Jack studied a breeding population of these owls in the infields at San Jose International Airport in California that offered good habitat but pose risks to air traffic. He also worked on statewide Burrowing Owl conservation and management issues. As cofounder of Albion Environmental, he devoted his time to inventory and impact assessment of special-status wildlife species as defined by the California Environmental Quality Act and the Endangered Species Act. Jack spent eleven years working at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology on the Eastern Peregrine Reintroduction Program for the Peregrine Fund. He was an important contributor to the reintroduction program for the eastern United States. He is partially responsible for all the peregrines in the East we now see.
Jack graduated from Cornell University in 1972 where he shared an apartment and spent many hours birding with Rob Blye, SBC Field Trip VP. He earned an MS in wildlife biology at Michigan Tech in the UP. He now lives in a spectacular wooded compound in Port Angeles, WA. He landscaped the property with over 400 (not kidding) dwarf conifers.
This event is co-sponsored with The Sussex Bird Club.
