Conversation with Esther Safran Foer | I Want You to Know We’re Still Here

Online

Join us for a live, interactive conversation with Esther Safran Foer, author of I Want You to Know We’re Still Here:  A Post-Holocaust Memoir, a deeply moving memoir of Esther’s search to learn her family’s past in the Ukraine.

Raised in a household where the past is so traumatic that it is never spoken about, Esther hears only small bits about her deceased father’s family and earlier life. When she finds out he had another wife and child who perished in the Holocaust, she becomes determined to find out how her father survived and more about his other family. Armed with a photograph of her father and the people who rescued him, she embarks on a trip to the Ukraine, bringing her face-to-face with the truth she seeks and giving her the chance to leave and take mementoes that prove a family’s endurance. This story shows the power of resilience, the desire to know the truth about our pasts, and how we collectively come to terms with terrible loss and grief.

Esther Safran Foer was the CEO of Sixth & I, a center for arts, ideas, and religion. She lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband, Bert. They are the parents of Franklin, Jonathan, and Joshua, and the grandparents of six.
