William McKeever | Emperors of the Deep

William McKeever | Emperors of the Deep

William McKeever is on a mission to change everyone’s views of sharks-the mysterious creatures of the deep.  After he stumbled on a shark tournament, he decided to investigate what was behind these events that killed so many sharks and was it logical to kill sharks in the first place. He found out that sharks are being massacred in more than just shark tournaments. Around the world, 100 million sharks are killed every year. Yet as he studied these animals, it was clear that they are crucial apex predators that maintain the health of the ocean ecosystem.

This multi-media presentation includes a film that takes viewers on a pulse-pounding journey around the world and deep under the water’s surface—from the frigid waters of the Arctic Circle to the coral reefs of the tropical Central Pacific—to dispel the narrative about sharks. This is followed by a discussion on how sharks are unequivocally essential to maintaining a balanced ecosystem. When these important apex predators are removed from the ocean, the effect on reefs, seagrass and all the marine ecosystems is catastrophic and leads to diseases in the oceans that affect wildlife.

William McKeever is an author and documentary filmmaker. His book, Emperors of the Deep, focuses on raising awareness to the plight of sharks and educating the reader on recent scientific discoveries about the importance of them to the marine ecosystem. He also is the producer/writer/director of a shark documentary film of the same name. The film exposes the threats that sharks face around the world and explains why society needs to change how it views these animals. William produced, wrote and narrated a six-part podcast series on sharks with the same name as the book. In addition, he is the founder of a 501C3 organization, Safeguard The Seas (STS). This tax-deductible non-profit focuses on educating the public on issues affecting sharks and the ocean.
