A Summer Solstice Fire in Pandemic Time: The Prophetic Imaginations of Simone Weil and Flannery O’Connor

A Summer Solstice Fire in Pandemic Time: The Prophetic Imaginations of Simone Weil and Flannery O’Connor

Online

The longest day of the year is approaching: June 20th, 2020. The longest day of the year is also the age-old celebration of the sun’s solstice, which inspires reflection on the mystery of the divine in the material world. In the work of writers Flannery O’Connor and Simone Weil, the sun represents the transformative power of divine love, which plays a role in their shared message of spiritual enlightenment. Join Jane Doering and Ruthann Johansen, co-authors of a new book on O’Connor and Weil, as they seek to answer two questions:

  1. How were the imaginations of these two twentieth-century writers, one a philosopher and the other a fiction writer, prophetic in their time?
  2. How and why are prophetic imaginations essential in pandemic time?

E. Jane Doering and Ruthann Knechel Johansen are the co-authors of the new book When Fiction and Philosophy Meet: A Conversation with Flannery O’Connor and Simone Weil. Jane Doering is the director emerita of the Teachers as Scholars Program at the University of Notre Dame where she taught French Language and Literature. She is the author of Simone Weil and the Specter of Self-Perpetuating Force. Ruthann Johansen is professor emerita at the University of Notre Dame and president emerita of Bethany Theological Seminary. She is the author of The Narrative Secret of Flannery O’Connor: The Trickster as Interpreter.

Browseabout Books is selling signed copies of the book, which will be mailed to the purchaser. Call-In orders are accepted Monday - Friday from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM at (302) 226-2665 or order books online.
