Join us for a conversation with author Carl Rollyson on his groundbreaking biography of Nobel Prize Winner, William Faulkner
Heretofore no biographer has integrated William Faulkner’s screenplays, fiction, and life into one narrative. The result is a new Faulkner, moving back and forth between Hollywood and home, creating scripts and novels that influence one another in ways not previously understood. The significance of Faulkner’s family life, especially his marriage to Estelle Oldham, receives fresh treatment in discussions of her own writing and of unpublished material. The result is an unprecedented intimate portrayal of the writer and his world, presenting the minute particulars of a life that Johnson and Boswell extolled as the paramount mission of biography.

Carl will be interviewed by Lawrence Wells. Wells began his publishing career at Yoknapatawpha Press by editing the photo-biography William Faulkner: The Cofield Collection by Jack Cofield. Author of two Doubleday novels, Rommel and the Rebel and Let the Band Play Dixie, Wells received the 2014 Faulkner-Wisdom award for narrative non-fiction at the New Orleans Words and Music Festival. He scripted an Emmy-winning 1994 Mississippi ETV documentary, Return to the River, narrated by James Earl Jones. His feature articles have been distributed by the NY Times Syndicate.His memoir In Faulkner's Shadow will be published September, 2020, by University Press of Mississippi.

Carl Rollyson’s biographies include American Isis: The Life and Art of Sylvia Plath; A Real American Character: The Life of Walter Brennan; Hollywood Enigma: Dana Andrews; Marilyn Monroe: A Life of the Actress; and Amy Lowell Anew: A Biography. His books about biography include Biography: A User’s Guide and Confessions of a Serial Biographer. His reviews of biographies have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, Minneapolis Star Tribune, and The New Criterion.. The Last Days of Sylvia Plath, his account of the events that led to her death, will be published in the spring 2020.
