Foreign Cinema Classics: "My Night at Maud's" (1969)
On the first Tuesday evening of every month (or in this case, the second Tuesday evening), the library is proud to show a different classic foreign film from years past. For December, we'll be showing Eric Rohmer's most celebrated film, "My Night at Maud's" from 1969, starring Jean-Louis Trintignant and Françoise Fabian.
In "My Night at Maud's," the rigid principles of a devout Catholic man (played by Trintignant) are challenged during a one-night stay with Maud (Fabian), a divorced woman with an outsize personality. The third and most celebrated of Rohmer's Six Moral Tales series of films, "My Night at Maud's" was the only one of the celebrated director's films to ever be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.
Of the film, the late Roger Ebert once wrote, "'My Night at Maud's' is about love, being a Roman Catholic, body language and the games people play. It is just about the best movie I've seen on all four subjects."
"My Night at Maud's" is 105 minutes long and rated PG. This film will be shown in French with English subtitles. And, as always, popcorn and refreshments will be provided.
