A Matter of Balance is an evidence – based program that helps older adults reduce their fear of falling and increase activity levels. Volunteer coaches work in pairs to lead small group community classes which consist of eight two-hour sessions. The curriculum addresses the fear of falling and engages the participant to view falls and the fear of falling as controllable. It also focuses on setting realistic goals for increasing activities and promoting exercise to increase strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance. The slow and low exercises are introduced and performed in 6 of the 8 sessions. Participants are involved in group discussion, brainstorming, and problem-solving activities and assertiveness. Through developing action planning and sharing practical solutions, participants use strategies to address changing behaviors and performing slow exercises to reduce their fear of falling and become good self-managers so that they have a good and healthier lifestyle.
