CANCELED: 2sdays: "The Bishop's Wife"

“We cannot recommend you to a more delightful and appropriate Christmas show,” says Bosley Crowther of The New York Times, referring to The Bishop’s Wife. Filmed in 1947, The Bishop’s Wife is the story of an Episcopal Bishop, Henry Brougham (David Niven), who has been working for months on the plans for an elaborate new cathedral which he hopes will be paid for primarily by a wealthy but stubborn widow. He’s overwhelmed and losing sight of his family and his lovely wife, Julia (Loretta Young). He’s starting to wonder why he became a churchman in the first place. Enter Dudley (Cary Grant), an angel sent to help him. Dudley helps everyone he meets, but not necessarily in the way they would have preferred. With the exception of Henry, everyone loves him. However, with Christmas approaching, the Bishop, who is jealous of Dudley because his wife is enjoying his company, begins to believe that Dudley is there to replace him, both at work and in his family's affections. “Grant's turn is thoroughly convincing because he himself appears to be having a terrific time: He's expansive, graceful, and seems always on the verge of chuckling with goodwill,” says Caren Weiner Campbell of Entertainment Weekly. TV Guide describes The Bishop’s Wife as “a warm, sentimental comedy-fantasy.” 1:49. Not rated.
