2sdays: "Be Natural"
Though we don’t often watch silent films these days, it’s still surprising that the first female film director was mostly unknown until this documentary by Jodie Foster. Be Natural: the Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blanché aims an overdue spotlight on the life and career of “the woman who launched the film industry as we know it,” which is how Guy-Blanché is described by Monique Jones of Just Add Color. Critics have praised Foster for shedding light on Guy-Blanché’s interesting life and career, adding rich historical context to the mix, and showing examples of Guy-Blanché’s pioneering work. Alison Gillmour of the Winnipeg Free Press says Be Natural “offers a passionate portrait of a remarkable woman, a necessary historical corrective and an urgent argument for the importance of film preservation.” The film may seem like a trip back in time, but it also raises issues that are right out of current news and the #MeToo movement. 1:43.
