2sdays: "Rocketman"

If you love Elton John, you’ll love Rocketman. If you loved Bohemian Rhapsody, you’ll love Rocketman. If you love costume dramas…you get the idea: Rocketman is one fun film, not totally realistic, but totally entertaining, thanks to great storytelling, casting, acting and production values. Actor Taron Egerton does a great job of portraying Elton John in a way that helps viewers understand him better, and boy does he have some pipes! Actors Jamie Bell, Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard, among others, lend terrific support, along with fantastic locations, sets and costumes. Rocketman tells the story of Elton John’s childhood and early years of struggles and successes, largely through integrated performances of some of Elton John’s and Bernie Taupin’s best songs, often showing how events inspired them. And though the storyline does “reshuffle reality, especially time and facts,” says reviewer Leah Pickett of The Chicago Reader, “the film is more enjoyable for it.” Many reviewers have said Rocketman is not a typical biopic, but Allison Rose of Flick Direct may have given the best explanation of the film’s appeal when she calls it, “an entertaining mix of real-life and fantasy, much like Elton John is himself.” 2:01. Rated R for language throughout, some drug use, and sexual content.
