2sdays: "Bohemian Rhapsody"

2sdays: "Bohemian Rhapsody"

In Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek, Oscar’s Best Actor for 2018, nails the role of Queen’s rocking-but-tortured frontman Freddie Mercury. Why he deserved to win is brilliantly explained by Richard Brody of The New Yorker: “Malek does an impressive job of re-creating Mercury's moves onstage, but the core of the performance is Malek's intensely thoughtful, insight-rich channelling of Mercury's hurt, his alienation and isolation even at the height of his fame.” Hearing Mercury sing while the near lookalike Malek struts his stuff is another great reason to see Bohemian Rhapsody. The entire cast is excellent; and features some surprises, namely a deeply disguised famous comedian and a Downton Abbey heartthrob turned villain; but it’s amazing that the actors who play the rest of the band are also almost dead ringers for the originals. They do a great job of showing the camaraderie and affection of the group. The film’s recreations of performances is reason enough to enjoy Bohemian Rhapsody but there are other delights. If you lived through the era, you will love revisiting it through the sets and costumes. If you love Queen’s songs, you will enjoy some of their back stories and seeing how they were written. 2:14. Rated PG-13 for sex, drugs, rock ’n roll, and language.
