2sdays: "Vice"

2sdays: "Vice"

Much has been made of Christian Bale’s transformation into Dick Cheney for the aptly named film Vice, which earned him several best actor nominations. Not enough has been made of real-life Cheney’s continuing influence on life in the United States and abroad because of his oversized role during George W. Bush’s presidency. Leave it to writer-director Adam McKay to show us how this all happened, telling Cheney’s story from his troubled youth, successful marriage and early career to becoming the most powerful man in the world. This is storytelling at its unconventional best: creative, amusing, hilarious and chilling. Once again, McKay gets the best out of Bale and Amy Adams (Lynne Chaney). Both age amazingly in front of our eyes thanks to their Academy Award-Winning makeup artists and hair stylists. They inhabit their roles brilliantly and the supporting cast, which includes Steven Carrell, Sam Rockwell, (Best Supporting Actor nomination) and Tyler Perry, do a great job too. Here’s high praise from Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun Times: “In Adam McKay's free-ranging, tone-shifting, darkly funny, super-meta, hit-and-miss, absurdist biopic Vice, Bale nails it as the resilient, backstabbing, front-stabbing, ruthlessly ambitious Cheney.” 2:12. Rated R for language and violent images.
