2sdays: "The Hate You Give"

The Hate U Give may be under your radar, but for anyone 13 or older, it’s well worth seeing. Though it treats serious matters, “It's so gripping to watch-as well as being, in places just delightfully funny that you never feel you're being preached to,” says Stephanie Zacharek of Time magazine. “It picks you up in one place and sets you down in another.” That’s a tall order for a film! Come to Dover Public Library and see how it’s done, and to walk more than a mile in someone else’s shoes. Share the story of Starr Carter, who has to constantly switch between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right. Based on a young adult novel, The Hate U Give has been praised by many critics. Michael Phillips of The Chicago Tribune calls it “honest and humane, as well as hopeful,” and Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian appreciates its “fierce storytelling.” “(Director) Tillman has an excellent touch for the quietly impactful scenes with Starr and her family, as well as the news footage-style depictions of marches and protests,” says Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times. “The filmmakers understand their characters so thoroughly that the insights seem to grow organically from their experiences,” comments Ben Sachs of The Chicago Reader, calling The Hate U Give “American studio filmmaking at its finest.” That’s certainly high praise. Add yours once you’ve seen the film! 2:12. Rated PG-13 for mature themes, violence, drug use & language.
