2sdays: "Colette"
One of France’s most beloved authors, best known for Gigi, began her literary career with four novels credited to her much older husband, the first of three. Already a popular author at the time, but suffering from writer’s block, he had his wife’s works published in his name and even retained the rights! Perhaps this is unsurprising since the author in question was born in 1873. The story of this early “success” is brought to life by Keira Knightley and Dominic West in the film Colette, which Manohla Dargis of the New York Times says, “takes a light, enjoyable fizzy approach to its subject.” “As the feisty embodiment of pre-feminist defiance Keira Knightly puts in a terrific, tightly wound performance,” says Jim Schembri of 3AW. To his credit, husband Willy moves Colette from rural France to Paris, recognizes her talent, and suggests she choose somewhat racy subject matter from her own life. The couple becomes the talk of Paris and their adventures together continue to inspire Colette. Finally though, their fights over creative ownership and gender roles propel her into overcoming societal constraints and a new life. She then revolutionizes literature, fashion and sexual expression. Matt Brunson of Film Frenzy calls Colette “Engaging and energetic,” while Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times is hoping for a sequel, which is certainly possible given the subject’s interesting life. 1:51. Rated R for some sexuality and nudity.
