The First Lady and Her Friend by Syl Woolford

Online

Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of President Franklin Delanor Roosevelt, was a friend of the African American Community.

1. She supported the creation of the Tuskegee Airmen and flew in a plane with one of them.

2. When the DAR kept Marian Anderson singing at Constitution Hall in Washington. DC, Eleanor Roosevelt created the opportunity for Marian Anderson to sing at the Lincoln Memorial.

3. Her relationship with Mary McLeod Bethune lasted for over a decade and the two of them created progress for colored youth, colored women and the African American community in general.

4. Eleanor Roosevelt’s activism created a political environment which allowed African Americans to switch from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party.

Eleanor Roosevelt’s support of the African American community should continue to be celebrated.

Presented by Syl Woolford, recognized by the Delaware National Education Association and the NAACP for his contribution to the preservation of African American history. Mr. Woolford is a member of the Delaware Heritage Commission, the Historical and Cultural Affairs Collections Committee, the Historic Preservation Fund, and the Wilmington University History Committee.
