A City Upon a Hill:  The American Character, Built over 250 Years of History

Join us at the South Coastal Library for an interactive presentation outlining the United states' qualities, such as strength of character and humanitarian values, that earned global respect from other countries. It was the Puritan, John Winthrop, who envisioned "a city upon a hill; the eyes of all people are upon us."  Dr. Errico will provide examples of nineteenth and twentieth century presidents who exhibited leadership qualities such as magnanimity, the ability to communicate high ideals, and strength during times of crisis.

Biography:

Charles Errico recently retired as a professor at Northern Virginia Community College and George Mason University.  He has a Ph.D. in American diplomatic history from the University of Maryland.  His book, Portrait of America, is required reading at numerous universities.  He has won a number of teaching awards and, in 2007, had the opportunity to meet the late Queen of England who was in Williamsburg celebrating the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement.
