WHYY Bridging Blocks | America's 250: What Does That Mean to You?

In-person

Join WHYY and the Lewes Public Library for an evening of discussion on America's 250. This year, the country is commemorating the 250th year anniversary of our democracy. It is an optimal time to come together as a community and share perspectives on our progress and our future.

Democracy traces its origins to 500 BCE, when the Greeks adopted Demokratia, or "rule by the people." Ancient Athenians practiced direct democracy, where citizens voted and enacted laws themselves. In the United States we live in a representative democracy, governed by elected officials. The phrase “We the People,” enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, aspires to balance power and ensures that the government serves everyone.

Is democracy still the most effective form of governance? How do you think this 3,000-year-old concept can evolve to meet the needs of modern society?

The program will include a brief video segment, followed by guided discussion facilitated in both small-group and large-group formats. Tony Cuffie, Senior Manager Community & Engagement, WHYY News, will host, and Brisa Luzzi Castro, Community Convener, WHYY News, will moderate.

Registration is required. Each individual attending must register.

About Bridging Blocks
Bridging Blocks is a series of neighborhood discussions aimed at bringing together culturally and politically diverse households for civic dialogue and understanding. One of its immediate goals is to partner with local schools and senior centers to host Bridging Blocks discussions on topics important to participants of all ages. These discussions will help foster civic dialogue, build community and develop conflict mediation, public speaking, and critical thinking skills.

Join WHYY News Community & Engagement team for Bridging Blocks, in partnership with The Free Library of Philadelphia, PECO, and supported by Fred and Barbara Sutherland.
