Delaware's Baseball Hall of Fame Player, William "Judy" Johnson
Delaware’s Baseball Hall of Fame Player, William “Judy” Johnson (1899-1989).
Join author, Ellen Rendle, to honor and celebrate Black History Month, and Judy Johnson, Delaware’s only Hall of Fame baseball player. Born William Johnson in Snow Hill, Maryland, “Judy” was raised playing ball on integrated ball fields in Delaware. Banned from playing in the Major Leagues, Johnson played in the Negro Leagues from 1921-1937 on some of the greatest teams of his day. Judy and his fellow Negro Leaguers endured heart-breaking difficulties just to take the field and played at a level equal to the Major Leaguers yet remained largely invisible all the same. The stories of what this talented, humble man and his fellow players endured is remarkable. Against the odds, the Negro Leaguers flourished in a sport that did not want them to thrive. Their legacy inspires us and provides a blueprint of how to live with persistence, excellence and dignity.
