Join the Lewes Public Library and Seaside Jewish Community online for a conversation with llan Stavans and Margaret E. Boyle, co-authors of Sabor Judío: The Jewish Mexican Cookbook.

Stavans and Boyle each bring a family tradition to this new cookbook celebrating the delicious fusion of two culinary traditions, Jewish and Mexican. Stavans is from a Sephardic background and grew up in Mexico City’s Jewish community while Boyle grew up in Los Angeles in an Ashkenazi-Mexican family. Beautifully illustrated and award winning, this cookbook offers 100 recipes tested by well-known Jewish chef, Leah Koenig. The original recipes, written in Yiddish, Polish, and Spanish, show how immigration and the diaspora form identity, and what it means to connect to your culture through food and language. Based on a huge array of sauces, many Mexican recipes are inherently kosher and vegetarian/vegan or easily tweaked to make them so.

Ilan Stavans, a leading Jewish Mexican scholar and critic, is Lewis-Sebring Professor of Humanities and Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College. He has written on Gabriel García Márquez, Jorge Luis Borges, and Pablo Neruda as well as books on Jewish Latin America. His awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, Chile’s Presidential Medal, the International Latino Book Award, and the Jewish Book Award.

Margaret Boyle is a Jewish-Mexican-American scholar and Director of Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies at Bowdoin College and Professor of Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies and Romance Languages and Literatures. She also is the director of Multilingual Mainers, an elementary world languages and cultures program providing age-appropriate tools to combat xenophobia, racism and intolerance through engagement with languages other than English. She has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholar as well as grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Whiting Foundation for work in cultural and international exchange.
