Dorie Miller: Hero of Pearl Harbor - Milford Museum American History Series

Dorie Miller was serving as a cook on the USS West Virginia when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Responding to a torpedo strike on one of the ship’s gun magazines, Miller began carrying the wounded to safety, including the captain of the ship.  Following this action, Miller, without any training on the weapon, manned a .50-caliber antiaircraft gun and continued firing at the enemy until the ammunition ran out. For these heroic actions, Dorie Miller received the Navy Cross.
