The History of Etiquette: Why We Do What We Do

The History of Etiquette: Why We Do What We Do

From the Middle Ages to the Wild West, see how the social expectations of polite society created (and even necessitated) etiquette, or 'proper behavior.' Discover how the demonstration of what is known as 'good manners' were a part of survival techniques during the formation of America. The program will also cover pandemic etiquette, from the Spanish Flu in 1918 to the more recent COVID-19, discussing how pandemics have changed social interaction. In this interactive program, prepare for props, costume changes, and some audience participation!

This event has been made possible in part by a grant from the Delaware Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom.
