God's Eye Craft

God's Eye Craft

Also known as Ojo de Dios in Spanish, the God's Eye craft is common in Latin American communities and is often made by Indigenous and Catholic people. God’s eyes are woven on sticks that are crisscrossed. The ends of the sticks represent the basic elements – earth, water, wind, and fire, and the four cardinal directions – north, south, east and west. The center of the eye symbolizes the power of seeing and understanding things we normally cannot see. The Huichol symbolism of the god’s eyes is primarily associated with the prayers for their children – prayers for a good long life, protection and to insure abundant crops.(Source: Museum of International Folk Art)

This program was selected to empower community members to tap into creativity, artistic literacy, and expression while also creating opportunity for positive social interaction, idea exchange and relaxation. Social activities such as crafts also have been shown to slow cognitive decline as we age and can assist seniors with concentration and dexterity.
