THE TRAIL TO DESEGREGATION: A JOURNEY TO FREEDOM AND EQUALITY

Louis Lorenzo Redding was the first African American admitted to the Delaware State Bar Association (1929) and a crusader in Delaware’s involvement for civil rights during the landmark US Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education decision in May, 1954.

Karen will share her personal insights from her time working with Louis L. Redding and her research into historic New Castle County sites important to our civil rights history.

Karen’s professional life included employment with Hercules Inc. (25 years), Verizon (10 years), and the City of Wilmington (10 years) in administrative and management positions. Karen’s government experience included working for Senator Margaret Rose Henry as a Legislative Aide in Dover (3 years). Karen is a premiere example of how valuable lifelong education can be, having received her Master Degree in Arts and Liberal Studies from the University of Delaware this past May.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Delaware is a volunteer based, learning cooperative for adults 50+. The Speaker’s Bureau is a group of our instructors who are part of our community outreach effort on education.
