"Someone Must Wash the Dishes": An Anti-Suffrage Satire: Re-Scheduled to July 21st
Following a 72-year battle against—not just male, but also female—Anti-Suffragists, American women won the vote in 1920. Today, it is astonishing, and hilarious, to rediscover women’s arguments AGAINST the vote.
Part One of "Someone Must Wash the Dishes" was insightfully written in 1912, by Marie Jenney Howe, a popular pro-Suffragist and Unitarian minister; many women fought against getting the vote, but none with more charm, prettier clothes—and less logic—than the fictional speaker of her satiric monologue. With insight and good humor, Howe turned the Antis’ own arguments against them. Michèle LaRue’s lively and revealing lecture puts these in historical context.
Witness a powerful performance of this anti-Suffrage satire, told by acclaimed historical storyteller, Michèle LaRue!
LaRue tours nationally with her repertoire of 30 Tales Well Told—vibrant stories from America’s Gilded Age and Progressive Era.
