Crabby Consequences: The Curious Case of Lost Crab Traps (NCC Reads)
Lost or abandoned crab pots are a significant issue in Delaware’s Inland Bays and the Delaware Bay, affecting both the environment and local industries. This presentation will examine the role of blue crabs in the ecosystem, the human and environmental factors contributing to derelict pots, and their long-term effects on marine life, fisheries, and navigation. We will also explore the variety of gear available to recreationally fish blue crabs, proper rigging techniques, common causes of gear loss, and the broader ecological consequences of abandoned fishing gear. Through data, case studies, and expert insights, this session will provide a comprehensive look at the impact of derelict crab pots and ongoing efforts to mitigate their effects.
