VITA Tax-Aide

VITA Tax-Aide

In-person

The Lewes Public Library is hosting IRS certified volunteers to prepare 2024 federal and Delaware income tax returns free of charge. The volunteers will work under the IRS’ VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program. This program is specifically designed to help taxpayers of all ages with low-to-moderate income, which is less than $67,000 per household. The goal is to help as many taxpayers as possible in our community who need this free service.

Volunteers may only prepare returns that fall within the IRS guidelines for scope. Lengthy, complex returns cannot be prepared. Taxpayers need to be sure they have received all their relevant tax documents prior to their appointment as no amended returns will be prepared.

Tax preparation will take place on Thursdays and Fridays in the large-meeting room at the Library from Friday, February 7 through Thursday, April 17. Appointments are available from 8:30 AM through 1:00 PM.

Appointments are required and can be made starting Monday, January 20, 2025 by calling 302-703-7198. This phone line is not staffed, so you will be directed to leave your name and the single best phone number to receive a callback to schedule your appointment. The return call may appear on caller id as spam/unknown caller/wireless call. To identify the call and not miss scheduling an appointment, save the number on your phone. Do not call or visit the library to make an appointment.

Returns previously done at the library under the AARP Tax-Aide Program with an income above the VITA threshold of $67,000 cannot be done. You can locate Tax-Aide sites in the area by calling their site locator at 888-227-7669.

To facilitate preparing your return, you will be requested to complete the IRS Form 13614-C before your appointment. This form will be available at the library's circulation desk or on the IRS.gov website.

Taxpayers need to bring the following to their appointment:

  • previous year’s return
  • social security cards for everyone listed on the return
  • picture identification
  • all forms reporting income
  • documents in support of itemized deductions
  • voided check for direct deposits
  • IRS security PIN#, if provided

A complete list of required items can be found here.

If no appointments are available or you do not qualify for VITA services, here are four alternatives you can pursue:
1) call the AARP Tax-Aide National Site Locator at 888-227-7669
2) visit the AARP Tax-Aide Site Locator website
