In Due Course: Integrating Milford High School
2024 marks the 70th anniversary of the landmark ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, in which the Supreme Court ruled separating children in public schools on the basis of race was unconstitutional. It signaled the end of legalized racial segregation in the schools of the United States, overruling the "separate but equal" principle set forth in the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson case. One of the companion cases argued with Brown was out of Delaware, so the library is embarking on a series of programs educating the public about the history of the Delaware cases, including the times, people, issues, and how it all played out then and thereafter.
Join us in the library for a screening of the 2024 documentary from 302 Stories titled In Due Course: Integrating Milford High School (written, directed, and edited by Michael Oates). This documentary explores the 1954 failed attempt to desegregate Milford High School, and the later successful admission of Black students in 1961. Tom Summers of Milford Museum will introduce the film and engage in conversation afterwards with Ed Kee, co-author of The Milford Eleven, a chronicle of the students involved in the initial integration attempt, and Edna Sharp, who was one of the Milford Eleven students integrating the school.
