Shove-Off Day - Juneteenth Celebration Event Series Kick-Off at the Library

Join us for the kick-off of a community-wide series of events commemorating Juneteenth!

On May 25, we celebrate Shove-Off Day, the date when US Colored Troops left Virginia to sail to Texas with word of emancipation. The Library will hold educational and cultural programs, including remarks from local dignitaries, musical selections, an educational presentation on African-Americans and the Civil War by Delaware historian Kathy Trusty (courtesy of Delaware Humanities), and an exhibit and program by the 3rd Regiment US Colored Troops Reenactors. The Library’s events will be between 10:00 – 12:00 PM.

In addition, the Friends of the African Union Church Cemetery and Fort Delaware State Park are sponsoring the Voices from the Past interpretive program at 3:00 PM at Fort Delaware. This program features living historian Willis Phelps portraying Pvt. James Elbert, a USCT interred at the African Union Church Cemetery.

Today's celebration has been made possible in part by Delaware Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom.
