Postwar Stories: How Books Made Judaism American
Online
Join the Lewes Public Library, Seaside Jewish Community, and Speak Out Against Hate for an online presentation by Rachel Gordan. Her most recent book, Postwar Stories: How Books Made Judaism American, received the Jordan Schnitzler First Book Publication Award of the Association of Jewish Studies and shows how books and movies changed American perceptions and helped shape post-Holocaust American Jewish identity. Gordan's insight into how Judaism became one of America’s big three religions will give historical context for discussing anti-Semitism and bigotry in the United States.
Attendees are welcome to join us in the library to view the online presentation.
Rachel Gordan is Assistant Professor of Religion and Jewish Studies and the Samuel "Bud" Shorstein Fellow in American Jewish Culture and Society at the University of Florida. She has published articles in academic journals including Religion and American Culture, Method & Theory in the Study of Religion, and Jewish Quarterly Review as well as outlets like the Forward, Tablet, Religion & Politics, the New York Jewish Week, and The New York Times. Gordan currently is working on a biography of author Laura Z. Hobson, who wrote the novel A Gentleman’s Agreement, which was the basis for the movie of the same name.
