The Big House

The Big House

Learn the fascinating history of the New Castle County Workhouse, called the "Big House" by the inmates who came from all three counties of Delaware. Built as a reform institution, the workhouse opened in 1901 and lasted until the early 1970s. During those years it was the site of a lynching and hired the first women prison guards - called the "Annie Oakleys" - in US history. In the 1920s, a unique reform allowed the inmates to actually run the asylum.

There's much more to learn about this historic Delaware institution in a presentation given by Steve Renzi from the Delaware Humanities.
