Emily Dickinson on Stage

Emily Dickinson on Stage

In-person

The Lewes Public Library Spoken Word Society Presents Poetry on Stage: Emily Dickinson

Poetry on Stage is a unique opportunity for adults and teens to study and discuss important poets and their work and to prepare a public performance based on their poetry. With live readings of important poems, biographical information, observations by contemporaneous and modern literary critics, still photos, video, and more, we prepare and present a compelling evening celebrating the power of the poet’s artistry.

This year we will study and present the work of Emily Dickinson (1830 – 1886) who revolutionized American poetry through her structural innovations and mastery of language. Led by Paul Huey-Burns (B.A. in Humanities, M.A. in Literary Studies, Literature teacher in Potomac, MD), this year’s program follows the success of last year’s “Poe on Stage” program. We may incorporate music and other expressive forms and poems by 20th and 21st-century poets whom Dickinson influenced (Adrienne Rich, Susan Howe, Victoria Chang, and others). If participants wish, we may also flex our poetic faculties with our own poems, inspired by our readings.

Open to teens and adults, the program will meet alternative Saturdays starting January 27 through April 20, culminating in a public presentation on April 27 from 5:00 - 6:00 PM.

Registration is required.
