THE ORPHAN TRAIN

THE ORPHAN TRAIN

Learn the history of this 75-year social experiment, now recognized as our nation’s first foster care system. This movement transported 250,000 homeless children from the streets of east coast cities to farming communities in the Midwest in search of homes. First-person accounts bring this history to life.

Donna Nordmark Aviles is a member of the Orphan Train Historical Society and Delaware Humanities. As a direct descendant, she has extensive knowledge of the orphan train era and is passionate about sharing this important piece of our nation’s history.

Donna has been an instructor at the University of DE’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) program in Wilmington and Kent County. This is a volunteer based learning cooperative for adults 50+. The Speaker’s Bureau is a group of our instructors who are part of our community outreach effort on education. Our website is: olli.udel.edu
