Mary Ann Shadd Cary was born to free blacks in Wilmington in 1823. At a time when women’s talents were confined to the home, Mary Ann become a teacher, writer, staunch abolitionist, suffragist, the first black woman to publish a newspaper in North America, the first female admitted to Howard Law School and one of our country’s first female lawyers. On the 200th anniversary of her birth, learn about her amazing life, her Delaware ancestors (dating before the Revolutionary War) and see how Delaware is finally recognizing the importance of this “diamond” of the “Diamond State.”
