Beginners Birding in Delaware: A Healthy Outdoor Activity

Beginners Birding in Delaware: A Healthy Outdoor Activity

Delaware is a great birding state.  Discussion will include details of bird walks, the benefits of birding to the birder as well as the birds, and conservation and how it affects birds.

Lloyd Maier taught music in public and private schools and privately for 20 years.  As a member of the Delmarva Ornithological Society for more than 30 years, Lloyd was made a fellow for contributions to the study of birds through participation in two breeding bird atlases and many Delaware bird counts.  She has been an instructor at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) since 2005, teaching classes in birding and music. She and co-instructor, Paul Beckman, are co-instructors for Birding 101: Introduction to Birdwatching, which combines classroom presentations with outdoor bird walks and field trips. Paul, retired from the Navy nuclear power program, took up birdwatching about seven years ago. He is also the instructor for OLLI’s Birdwatching Club.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Delaware is a volunteer based learning cooperative for adults 50+.  The Speakers Bureau is a group of our instructors who are part of the community outreach effort on education. For more information and to learn how to participate in OLLI, visit olli.udel.edu.
