Lecture: Brown vs. Board of Education

Since Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896 the law of “Separate but Equal” was enforced in the United States. Black students and white students were separated by race, but the law assumed that the education they received was equal. The reality was the white students across the country had a higher quality of education than Blacks.

The NAACP Defense Fund, under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, challenged the Plessy v. Ferguson decision and in 1954 the Supreme Court ruled that segregated education was unconstitutional. This lecture, led by Syl Woolford, looks at the legal fight that took place in Brown v. Board and the major changes it made to our society.
